Frequently Asked Questions
The part of the website where I ask myself a bunch of questions and then proceed to answer them.
How do I pronounce your name? Like Alt-House, or All-Touse. Either way is totally cool. Sorry, someone has already made the joke about Alternative House music!
How do I book a mix with you? What’s your rate? Feel free to contact me and I will get back to you within 24 hours (M-F). Please include a rough mix so I can get a sense of where the project is currently at.
How long will it take to hear a first mix? For singles, usually within 1-2 weeks from when files are received. Please note that your song is only added to the queue once files are received to mix. (Production schedules often run behind, so this is the only way to be fair to everybody!) For EPs and albums I’m usually booking 3-4 weeks out and usually I can hold time for these.
I'm on a super tight deadline, can you do it? Yes, please let me know your deadline as soon as possible and I will do my best to accommodate. If it’s very short notice, a rush fee may apply.
What's included in your mix rate? Any number of revisions needed, and alternate versions (Instrumental, Clean, etc) once we're done. Stems are included in the deliverables as requested. If we need to re-mix the song because of new vocals, new production, etc an additional fee will apply.
I need my vocals tuned / timed, and my drums edited, will you do it? Yes, I’d be happy to help with that. Please note these editing services are separate from mixing, and are an additional rate.
Will you mix and master my record? I’m happy to help with both, although my preference would be to send to a trusted third party for mastering. The reason is pretty simple - by the time I’m done mixing your song, I’ve heard it a few hundred times and no longer have the same objectivity I did when we started. Without a fresh perspective, my ability to improve upon a song in mastering is limited. What I can guarantee is a release-ready master that honors the mix that we loved and signed off on. If I’m mastering my mix I will most likely ask for some extra time to clear my ears before mastering. Usually I like to take at least a week away from the song before mastering it.
If we want to hire a mastering engineer, who would you recommend? A few of my favorite mastering engineers are Connor Hedge, Mystery Room Mastering, and Moses Mastering. They are all excellent in their own right and I’d be happy to recommend any of them depending on the project and genre.
Will mastering fix X and Y that I don't like about the mix? In my experience, probably not. As such if there’s anything you’re still hearing by the end of the mix, please let me know and let’s fix it! I’m a believer in the saying “mix like there’s no mastering” and I try not to pass problems down the line. Ideally, mastering should have very little if anything to do by the time we’re done with the mix.
Ugh, but I feel bad asking for more mix changes! Don’t feel bad — it’s your record! Let’s make it as good as it can be.
How do I deliver a song to you to be mixed? These are my session delivery guidelines. Basically try to make it clean but send it however is easiest for you.
Do you still have the files for *X Project we worked on forever ago*? I back up all my projects on multiple hard drives and also to the cloud. That said, I can’t guarantee I still have it, so please take care to archive your project assets once we’re finished.
What’s your mixing philosophy? I try to to stay as open as possible to where the song and music is taking me. No formulas or templates applied; every mix is tailor made.
I don’t aim to impart a specific sound on my work; instead I try to adapt to the needs of the song and artist. The best compliment I could receive is “I love this song! Oh you mixed it? I couldn’t tell.”
I think a great mix should sound like what the song was always meant to be.
What kind of music do you mix? Recently I’ve worked in various Pop, Rock, R&B, Indie, CCM and Gospel genres. I’ve also made records that could be classified as Jazz, A Capella, Classical, etc. In an increasingly genre-less world, I'm always up for a challenge.
What's up with all the Christian music? I work on Christian music pretty often, but honestly I don't really think much about the genre lines. Every mix is the same: making the song more itself, bringing the best out of the song, maximizing emotional impact.
Will you produce my song? As of 2023 I’m no longer taking on any production work in order to focus on mixing and mastering. I’d be happy to put you in touch with some of my favorite producers though - please feel free to inquire.
Do you mix “in-the-box”? Yup! I think most people are nowadays? But the way I work in-the-box is absolutely influenced by analog, both in workflow and sound. I don’t like things that sound overly clean and digital.
What gear do you use? Genelec 8361As, treated and tuned room, RME UFX+, Mac. Way too many plugins. Please see my Gear page for more information.
